The winning HackaTEEN project is set to be put into practice. Students from Znojmo presented their solution to the town council

The HackaTEEN competition aims to give young people the opportunity to come up with ideas that can help improve the places where they live – and, above all, to enable them to develop these ideas further and put them into practice.

The winning team of this year’s HackaTEEN competition – the Galacti team from Dr Karel Polesný Grammar School in Znojmo – was allowed to present their CoolSquares project directly to the Znojmo city council.

The students came up with a solution to one of the current problems facing cities – the overheating of public spaces and the lack of shade during hot summer days. They designed modular green structures that can serve as shade structures or plant-covered canopies, helping cool the surrounding area not only through the shade they provide but also through water evaporation from the plants.

The project also includes an app that lets users select a specific location, propose a suitable solution, estimate its cooling effect, and calculate approximate implementation costs.

However, the meeting with city representatives was not merely a presentation of the winning idea. The students discussed together the possibilities for implementing it directly in Znojmo: where such a solution might be appropriate, what conditions would need to be taken into account, and how the project could be developed further.

The topic the students are working on is directly linked to the current challenges that the town itself is addressing. “The town of Znojmo has long been concerned with green spaces and climate change. We are revitalizing individual parks and also working on retention basins and other measures that help prepare the town for climate challenges. For next year, we are planning an adaptation strategy, which we intend to set out comprehensively in a single document and subsequently incorporate into the town’s individual investments in green spaces,” said František Koudelka, Mayor of Znojmo.

“It is clear that the students have chosen the right and timely topic and that they are fully committed to it. On behalf of the town of Znojmo, we want to allow them to see some of their ideas put into practice in public spaces,” added the mayor.

We would like to congratulate the Galacti team on their victory and wish them the best of luck in taking the CoolSquares project another step closer to realization – and also to their next presentation on the international stage in Barcelona.
