Join the "Safe to School" program

Is there a school in your village, town, or city district where the surrounding area is plagued by heavy traffic, dangerous crosswalks, complicated parking, or a lack of traffic control measures?

The “Safe Way to School” program helps schools and local governments identify hazardous spots along students’ routes to school and develop specific proposals for improving them.
The project brings together schools, students, parents, local governments, and transportation experts.

“A safe trip to school starts by asking those who make that journey every day.”

Students become “experts on their own way to school.” During class, they record their daily commutes to school on “feeling maps” and highlight places where they don’t feel safe or find problematic. The project also includes field trips, during which participants verify problematic locations around the school firsthand and work together to find ways to improve them.
Parents, teachers, and other school staff also participate in data collection. The result is a unique set of suggestions from those who know the school’s surroundings best. These findings then serve as the basis for expert assessment and proposals for transportation, organizational, or construction measures.

What will you gain by participating?

  • An overview of hazardous locations along students’ routes to school
  • Active involvement of schools, parents, and the local community in planning safer public spaces
  • Data-driven information to support municipal or city decision-making
  • Proposals for specific transportation and infrastructure measures
  • Information useful for planning investments and public space improvements
  • Support for active mobility—walking, cycling, and using public transportation
  • Enhanced transportation literacy and responsible behavior among young people in traffic
This year, we implemented the project in collaboration with Jasanová Elementary School in Brno-Jundrov, where students mapped their daily routes to school, identified problem areas around the school, and helped find possible solutions.

Are you interested in implementing this project in your community as well?

Get in touch with us, and together we’ll develop a project tailored to your school, municipality, or city district.
