June 25, 2025 – Chiavenna hosted the official launch of the European project EURADAPT, an initiative developed under the Interreg Europe programme and co-financed by the European Union.
EURADAPT brings together 9 partners from different European countries (Italy, Spain, France, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ukraine, Sweden, and Ireland) with the aim of improving the implementation of local and regional climate change adaptation policies—one of the major global challenges with increasingly evident impacts on the environment, public health, the economy, and social cohesion.
Within this context, EURADAPT serves as an interregional learning platform to strengthen the adaptive capacity of participating regions through peer learning and the exchange of best practices.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The interregional learning process will focus on sharing knowledge and experiences related to the design and implementation of adaptation strategies, plans, and actions in the following key areas:
A key feature of EURADAPT is the collaboration between more advanced regions in climate adaptation and more vulnerable territories that often have less capacity to respond. The project promotes a mutual approach aimed at transferring expertise, tools, and tailored strategies in line with the climatic and economic specificities of each area.
The Chiavenna kick-off marks the beginning of a shared journey—both European and local—to address the effects of climate change in a practical and collaborative way.
PROJECT PHASES
Interregional cooperation is structured into two main phases:
PROJECT EVENTS AND VISITS
In addition to the project’s launch event, partners will periodically meet for the following interregional seminars:
ADAPTING TO CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH STRONGER REGIONAL POLICIES
The project aligns with the European Green Deal—aiming for climate neutrality by 2050—and the new EU Strategy on Adaptation to Climate Change, promoting a long-term vision for a climate-resilient Europe.
Climate change is a critical challenge for Europe’s regions, especially considering that nearly 85 million people live within 10 km of the coast and are exposed to risks such as flooding and erosion.
While some regions are already well-prepared, others are still seeking effective solutions to address their vulnerabilities. EURADAPT’s overarching goal is to improve the design and implementation of regional climate adaptation policies and strategies through policy learning and capacity building. The project enables frontrunner regions to share their expertise and support less developed and more vulnerable areas in identifying climate and economically tailored solutions.
EURADAPT PARTNERS
The project is led by the Mountain Community of Valchiavenna, which brings solid experience in managing ERDF-funded projects. The organisation will oversee the strategic and operational coordination of EURADAPT, reaffirming its commitment as a key actor in fostering interregional cooperation on climate change adaptation.
