How can we protect public spaces from extreme heat while also preparing municipalities for the impacts of climate change? This was the topic we explored during a field trip to the town of Ratiboř, which we organized as part of the international BeReady project for mayors and municipal representatives from the South Moravian Region.
The goal of the field trip was to showcase concrete examples of adaptation measures directly in the field and to facilitate the sharing of experiences among local governments and expert partners.
We presented the participants with specific solutions that have been implemented to help reduce the impacts of urban heat islands in cities and towns. A bioclimatic bus stop with a green roof and cooling elements—which help lower temperatures in the surrounding area and improve residents’ thermal comfort during summer heat waves—generated a great deal of interest.
We also introduced them to other innovative approaches to mitigate the “heat island” effect and strengthen the resilience of public spaces to the impacts of climate change.
As part of the program, we shared experiences from projects already implemented, presented options for financial and technical support for municipalities, and offered inspiration from other European regions that are systematically addressing climate change adaptation. The discussions also confirmed that linking practical experience, lessons learned, and concrete implementations is key to successfully integrating adaptation measures into municipalities' day-to-day operations.
We would like to thank the municipality of Ratiboř and all our partners for their openness, for sharing their experiences, and for the inspiring discussion on how we can work together to strengthen municipalities’ resilience to climate change.
JINAG Helps Municipalities Adapt to Climate Change
Is your municipality working on redesigning public spaces to reduce overheating and improve residents’ quality of life? Contact us by email at marie.indrakova@jinag.eu.
As the JINAG agency, we help municipalities prepare and implement climate change adaptation measures. One example is our collaboration with the municipality of Drnholec, where we supported the development of solutions to increase the resilience of public spaces to extreme temperatures.
