A CHILD IS THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED BUT LEAST EXPLICIT MEMBER OF SOCIETY - Roger Hart
The child as part of participation? Without a doubt yes! Children are active members of society with their own thoughts, ideas and experiences that can enrich decision-making about their future. The importance of including children in the participation process was discussed in the third model of the PARTICAFFÉ training programme led by Dagmar Peřina, the leader of the participation team.
Involving children in participation is crucial for many reasons.
1. Understanding the child's perspective
2. Developing responsibility
3. Building trust
4. Strengthening social skills
5. Gaining experience for the future
The participants of the module agreed that children are vision makers, partners and hardworking people with a different perspective than adults who are eager to collaborate.
The following themes were raised at the meeting:
- involvement of children and youth in local government
- the participation ladder
- participation from above and below
- school participatory budgeting
- examples of good practice: the regional project Improve Your School
- school forum
In addition, representatives of municipalities experienced first-hand how a school forum is run and how to conduct it.
